Surviving The Scorching Days
Lovely Readers!
As the sweltering heat persists across the globe, Denver finds itself baking under an unforgiving sun. Even as summer begins to wane, the temperatures in the “Mile High City” remain blisteringly high. Don’t get me wrong, I am well aware of the three digit temperatures, in Arizona and other southern states, but I already know I could not do that, I can only speak for my experiences here in Denver.
With this kind of heat, it is essential to stay cool and hydrated. Whether you’re a Denver native or just visiting, it’s crucial to take steps to protect yourself from the intense heat. This blog will guide you through innovative ways to stay hydrated, the importance of sunscreen, and how you can make the most of your time in the sun. And yes, we’ll even throw in some music recommendations to keep your spirits high!
1. The Heat Is On: Understanding the Denver Heat Wave
Denver is called the “Mile High City for a reason. The altitude and sunny weather often results in a unique blend of intense heat and dry conditions. When combined with obvious global climate shifts, this creates a challenging environment for residents and visitors alike. Understanding how heat affects the body and the environment can help you better prepare for and respond to these conditions.
The high altitude in Denver means the sun’s rays are more intense, increasing your risk of heat related illnesses like dehydration, heat cramps, and exhaustion. Even as the summer season winds down, the sun can still deliver a powerful punch, making hydration and sun protection paramount.

2. Hydration Nation: Clever and Innovative Ways to Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated in extreme heat is crucial, but it doesn’t have to be boring. Here are some inventive ways to keep yourself refreshed:
* Infused Waters: Jazz up your water with natural flavors by adding fruits, lemon, herbs, or vegetables. Try combinations like cucumbermint, strawberrybasil, or lemonlime for a refreshing twist.
*Frozen Fruit Cubes: Freeze small chunks of fruit in ice cube trays filled with water or juice. Add these cubes to your drinks for a burst of flavor and an extra dose of hydration.
*Hydration Apps: Use smartphone apps that remind you to drink water throughout the day. Many of these apps offer fun reminders and customizable goals.
*Water Bottles: I love the water bottles with the lines and catchy phrases that remind you to drink up.
*Hydration Boosting Foods: Incorporate foods with high water content into your diet. Watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges are all excellent choices that help keep you hydrated while providing essential vitamins and minerals.
*Electrolyte Rich Drinks: Sports drinks or coconut water can help replenish electrolytes lost through sweating. Just be aware of the sugar content and opt for lower sugar options when possible. I have been using a little bit of monk fruit in mine. The brain does not know it is monk fruit, but I don’t get that spike, or sugar high, which is important for me.
*DIY Ice Pops: Create your own ice pops using fresh fruit juice, yogurt, or Kefir. They’re not only delicious but also a fun way to stay hydrated, and will give you those pre and probiotics your belly needs.

3. Sunscreen: A Year-Round Necessity
While it’s easy to think sunscreen is only for summer, UV rays are a year round thing. Even as the seasons change, protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation remains essential.
Choose Broad Spectrum Protection: Opt for sunscreens labeled as broad spectrum to guard against both UVA and UVB rays. A higher SPF is recommended for prolonged sun exposure.
Reapply Regularly: Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating, we all know this, but do we do it!!!. Set a timer on your phone as a reminder to reapply.
Use Sunscreen Friendly Makeup: Many foundations and powders now include SPF. They’re a great way to add an extra layer of protection without changing your routine.
Sunscreen in Unlikely Places: Don’t forget areas like your ears, the back of your neck, and the tops of your feet, and bald head. These often-overlooked spots are vulnerable to sunburn.
4. Creative Ways to Remember Sunscreen
We all know we should apply sunscreen, but it’s easy to forget. Here are some creative methods to make sure you don’t skip this important step:
Sunscreen Stations: Keep sunscreen in strategic places around your home—by the door, next to your car keys, or even in the fridge. This way, you’ll be reminded to apply it before heading out.
Sunscreen Reminders: Use a reminder app on your phone to send you notifications about sunscreen application. You can set it to go off every two hours when you’re outside.
Incorporate a Routine: Make sunscreen application part of your morning routine, like brushing your teeth. This helps build a habit, so you won’t forget.
Sunscreen Stickers: Place fun stickers or notes on your mirror or fridge to remind you to apply sunscreen. The visual cue can be surprisingly effective.
Sunscreen as a Gift: Have you ever given sunscreen as a small gift to friends or family or put a small tube of your favorite one in a gift basket. It’s a practical item that’s often appreciated, and it can serve as a gentle reminder for you as well.

5. Music and Heat: The Perfect Playlist to Cool Down
What better way to beat the heat than with some great music? Here are some tracks to keep you cool and entertained:
“The Goodness” by Toby Mac: Dive into this song, which combines a catchy smooth beat along with lyrical brilliance. This song’s infectious rhythm will keep your mood upbeat even on the hottest of days.
“Underneath the Sky Tonight” by Direction Beach: Love that song. It offers a fresh, modern vibe that’s perfect for warm nights.
“Haiti” by VBSR: This track is not just a reminder of what is going on in Haiti, but also a way to remember the people and their struggles right now. It is even better if you know someone from Haiti you can give them a big hug and ask them how they are doing.
These tunes are great companions for outdoor activities or simply relaxing in the shade. A good playlist can make even the hottest day feel a little cooler.
6. Embracing the Heat: Fun Ways to Enjoy the Sun
Despite the blistering temperatures, there are still plenty of ways to have fun and stay safe. Here are some activities to enjoy the sunny weather:
Picnics in the Park: Head to a shaded area in a local park for a relaxing picnic. Bring along hydrating foods, water sprayers and plenty of sunscreen.
Water Games: Engage in water-based activities like sprinklers, water balloons, or a pool day. These are great ways to cool off while having fun.
Outdoor Concerts: Attend local outdoor concerts or events. Enjoying live music is a fantastic way to make the most of the sun while staying entertained, don’t forget umbrellas!
Early Morning or Late Evening Walks: Take walks in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. This way, you can enjoy the outdoors without the peak heat.
Head to the Hills: Let’s face it nothing beats a beautiful drive up, up, up! There are so many places in Colorado to enjoy. The Rocky Mountains are a bit cooler in the summertime. I mean, who doesn’t love a drive up and down the “Million Dollar Highway” between Ouray and Silverton, Colorado. (That is, if you have the guts!!) However, don’t forget to ALWAYS leave the land better than you found it. Many people from here will tell you that, things won’t go right for you if you deface the rocks- officials- will come after you!
Staycation: Create a staycation at home by setting up a mini water park in your backyard. Think kiddie pools, water slides, and plenty of popsicles.
Cool Down and Stay Safe
The intense heat can be challenging, but with the right strategies, you can stay cool, hydrated, and protected. Embrace innovative hydration methods, remember to apply sunscreen diligently, and let the rhythm of some great music highlighted above to keep your spirits high.
As you navigate the sweltering days ahead, remember that a little planning can go a long way in keeping you comfortable and safe. Enjoy the sun responsibly, and let your summer be filled with both fun and safety.
